Formula A
Cruttenden takes series lead after dramatic final

Chris Rogers

Danny Cruttenden (Wilmington, Dartford) leads the Renault-backed Super One Formula A karting Championship after two podium finishes in rounds seven and eight at Shenington circuit on Sunday, 8th July.

Lee Bell (High Wycombe) and Jonathan Walker (Blackburn) took one win each in the heats, with Chris Rogers (Waltham Cross) claiming a front row start alongside pole-sitter Walker.

Rogers took an early lead in Final 1 only for Walker to pass him on lap two. Meanwhile, reigning champion Mark Litchfield (Ripley) climbed from 12th on the grid to lie seventh, while Cruttenden made his way through from 18th.

By the midway point, Litchfield took third place and was in a lead group with Rogers and Walker, while Cruttenden led the chasing pack in fourth place. Litchfield and Walker traded overtaking moves at the hairpin in the battle for third place before Cruttenden passed Walker for the final podium spot.

In the closing stages, Litchfield took the lead at the hairpin only for Rogers to force his way back past at Bruno chicane, which is not usually a recognised overtaking opportunity, and took the victory.

Final 2 saw Litchfield jump into an early lead before his engine seized at the last corner on lap three. Rogers inherited the lead but only for a handful of laps as he suffered the same fate as Litchfield at the same place.

Richard Bradley

Remarkably, the race’s third leader, Jonathan Walker, also saw his engine seize at the same corner as first place became something of a poisoned chalice.

The retirements left Richard Bradley (London) clear to take his first win of the season ahead of Cruttenden and Lee Bell. Scott Jenkins (Bristol) claimed fourth place after a superb drive from 17th on the grid.

Cruttenden now leads the standings by 10 points from Litchfield with four rounds left.

The Junior MSA British Kart Championship continues at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Warden Law circuit near Sunderland, on 25th/26th August.

Renault Formula A provisional championship standings:

1st – Danny Cruttenden, 323pts; 2nd – Mark Litchfield, 313pts; 3rd – Jonathan Walker, 300pts; 4th – Chris Rogers, 296pts; 5th – Lee Bell, 290pts; 6th – Richard Bradley, 288pts.

Formula ICA
Double win for
Burton as Harper keeps lead

Elliot Burton

Elliot Burton (Huntingdon) emerged victorious from a battle with Robert Foster-Jones (Southend) taking two wins in Super One karting Finals at Shenington circuit on Sunday, 8th July. Greg Harper (Workington) still leads the Renault-backed series after finishing fourth and fifth in rounds seven and eight at the Banbury track.

Burton and Foster-Jones each took one win in the morning heats to secure front row starts for the two Finals. The first race saw Foster-Jones take an early lead as four drivers failed to make it past the first corner.

The two leaders quickly stretched away from the chasing pack, dicing for the lead throughout. Just behind, Harper passed James Gornall (Peterborough) for third place and Jason Edgar (Cleator) took sixth place from Shaun Carter (Crowthorne).

Laura Tillett (Addington) had been running strongly in fifth before retiring at the hairpin, leaving Edgar and Carter to join the four-way battle for third. Burton and Foster-Jones continued their tussle into the final lap when Burton edged past to take his first win of the season.

He followed it up in Final 2 taking an early lead from pole position as Edgar passed Foster-Jones for second place. With the top six clear and separated into three pairs of drivers, Sam Tordoff (Leeds) pressed Harper for fifth place in the closest battle.

In the second half of the race, Edgar and Carter slowed each other as they fought for third place, with Harper taking advantage by overtaking both. Foster-Jones began to drop away from Burton and was almost caught for second place in the closing stages.

The last two laps saw Harper’s earlier opportunism undone as Edgar and Carter passed him on successive laps, Edgar hanging on for third place.

Burton’s double win lifts him to ninth in the standings, with Harper now leading Tordoff by nine points with four rounds left.

The Junior MSA British Kart Championship continues at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Warden Law circuit near Sunderland, on 25th/26th August.

Renault Formula ICA provisional championship standings:

1st – Greg Harper, 361pts; 2nd – Sam Tordoff, 352pts; 3rd – Rob Foster, 349pts; 4th – Robert Foster-Jones, 334pts; 5th – Justin Edgar, 323pts; 6th – Raymie Eastwood, 318pts.

Formula JICA
Rowland dominates to regain championship lead

Oliver Rowland

Oliver Rowland (Penistone) got his Super One karting title campaign back on track with two victories at Shenington circuit, near Banbury, on Sunday, 8th July. The 14-year-old won both Renault Formula JICA Finals after earlier winning both of his heats.

In Final 1, Rowland took an immediate lead from pole position ahead of Rikki Gordon (Co Antrim) who had passed Tom Patterson (Newchaple) in the opening laps. Gordon then made a small error to drop behind Patterson, Tom Joyner (Braintree) and Tom Grice (Hockley).

Gary Thompson (Co Dublin) , who led the series coming into the weekend, had to come from near the back of the grid to join the top six battle in the latter stages of the race. Meanwhile, Grice passed Patterson for second place but was well adrift of Rowland who set a string of impressive lap times.

Luke Wright (Blandford) had seemed set for a strong finish before contact with Alex Lynn (Dunmow) left him out of the race. Sam Jenkins (Bristol) also undid earlier good work dropping four places to finish 10th. Patterson endured a difficult end to the race being overtaken by both Thompson and James Thorp (Evesham).

Final 2 followed a similar pattern for Rowland who led away from pole position after one restart caused by a red flag. Grice was able to stay closer to the lead than in Final 1 and the front two soon opened a gap to third-placed Thompson.

Sam Jenkins and Jordan Lennox-Lamb (Bedford) both passed Rikki Gordon in the early stages, but Gordon fought back to reclaim fifth from Jenkins. At the midway point, Jenkins lost two more places to Max Goff (Brigstock) and Thorp.

Rowland’s lead proved unassailable as he took his sixth win from eight Finals, with Grice and Thompson competing the podium.

Rowland regains his lead and now heads Thompson by just three points with four rounds left.

The Junior MSA British Kart Championship continues at five venues around the UK, with the next round at Warden Law circuit near Sunderland, on 25th/26th August.

Renault Formula JICA provisional championship standings:

1st – Oliver Rowland, 341pts; 2nd – Gary Thompson, 338pts; 3rd – Tom Joyner, 329pts; 4th – Sam Jenkins, 325pts; 5th – Jordan Lennox-Lamb, 309pts; 6th – Shane Crosbie, 308pts.
