UK Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 10 - 15th October 2006 - Sandown Park

The final round of the Championship saw a return to the Sandown Park circuit and true to form, the weather was set for a perfect late summers day.

With the exception of Team X, who simply needed a clean finish to secure the overall Championship, there was a battle royal to be had for the remaining podium places. Likewise the Championship for the ‘Pro’ and ‘Clubman’ classes was anyone’s for the taking, with just a few points separating all the major contenders.

RPM Bayliss Boys just out qualified Baron Racing by one hundredths of a second to claim pole position, whilst DXI-Sin and Lucas Racing made up the second row. AJB 2 took the qualifying honours for the ‘Pro’ class and and Team Sixty Two were the quickest of the ‘Clubman’s’.

After a second lap incident, super-pro team Autotekk were back in the pits with a bent axle and pro-class contenders, Frascati Racing and Modelworlduk.com had dropped to the back of the field, assumedly as a result of the same related incident.

Ironically, this was the only incident in the whole of the race and the remaining six hours were completed without a single yellow flag, breakdown or off-road excursion by any of the teams.

Meanwhile at the head of the field, the leaders had pretty much settled down, line astern in the order in which they qualified and it was some forty five minutes later before RPM Bayliss Boys and Baron Racing, eventually pulled clear of the ensuing pack. With the hour mark behind them, the leading eight karts were all on the same lap and the first of the three mandatory fuel stops was fast approaching.

When the entire field had refuelled, it was Lucas Racing who emerged as race leaders from Baron, Bayliss Boys, DXI-Sin, Alpha, AJB 2 and Team X who were quietly circulating in seventh place. Sonic Deaf Monkeys had now taken over as clubman class leaders, but were hotly pursued by DXI-Wild and SD Racing, all scrapping over a creditable tenth place.

Notably at this point in the race, pro-class championship contenders, Frascati Racing, who had dropped to the back of the field in the earlier second lap incident, were now back up to sixteenth place and on course to salvage their hopes of pro-class victory.

At half race distance, the top six places were now occupied exclusively by super-pro teams led by Lucas from Bayliss Boys, Alpha, DXI-Sin, Team X, and Baron. In synchronized order, AJB 2, Focus and the flying Frascati team, led the pro-class battle in 7th, 8th and 9th places respectively. In 10th, 11th, and 12th places were DXI-Wild, Sonic Deaf Monkeys and SD Racing who were still all scrapping over the clubman honours for the race and likely for the Championship.

Back at the head of the field, Lucas Racing were now 27 seconds clear of their nearest pursuer who emerged as Baron Racing, now reaping the benefits of an early first fuel stop. This left Bayliss Boys, DXI-Sin, Alpha and Team X, fighting for what would transpire as the last of the podium places.

Just outside the top ten, clubman team Grassroots were enjoying their best run of the season, when their empty fuel tank caused them to splutter to a crawl. With a friendly shunt from the ever-obliging team Eaurouge, they made it back to the pits for fuel but alas this had already compromised their excellent run and they eventually finished in 20th place. Similarly, Focus who were in the pro-class hunt, suffered a mechanical failure, leaving the honours eventually to AJB 2 from Frascati and Team Velocity.

The Clubman class fight also looked resolved as the race entered it’s final hour with Sonic Deaf Monkeys now clear of DXI-Wild and Rogue Racing, but the fight for the overall lead was far from over.

During the last hour or so, Lucas Racing’s lead had been reduced down to17 seconds from the previous 27 seconds. These two were now well clear of the other super-pro teams who were still scrapping over 3rd place and with their lap times remaining constant, Bayliss Boys would hold on to 3rd place from Alpha, DXI-Sin and Team X.

With less than 30 minutes to go, Baron Racing had reduced the gap to 9 seconds and both driver and the kart had hit the sweet spot and were now the fastest kart on circuit. With less than 15 minutes to go the gap was down to 5 seconds and Baron now had Lucas Racing physically in their sights.

In the closing minutes of the race, Baron were now on the rear bumper of the leaders but both were in heavy traffic. A number of aggressive passing manoeuvres from Baron were thwarted by some equally aggressive defensive manoeuvres by the Lucas driver. Firstly with mud flying from the off-road efforts to pass and then the smoke from the rubbing tyres as Barron eventually forced their way past the leaders amongst some bewildered back markers and under the very watchful eye of yours truly, Clerk of the Course.

Moments later, Baron took the chequered flag to take the race win and by doing so secured their runner up place in the 2006 Championship.

Quietly and almost unnoticed, Team X cruised across the line in 6th place, just as the doctor ordered and became the 2006 UK Pro Kart Endurance Champions and subsequently are the only team to have ever won this prestigious title for a second time.

For the writer, it was my last race as, CoC, Championship Promoter, and article writer for Karting Magazine. I extend my best wishes and thanks to everyone concerned and wish the Championship continuing success for the future.
