Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 9 - 17th September 2006 - Thruxton
This was the first time the championship had visited the Thruxton Raceway in Hampshire and we were made very welcome by the management, duly aided by some late summer sunshine. The Championship had now reach a critical point for many of the teams and the top contenders were very aware that this was home territory for the DXI-Sin team who were favourites to win this round.
No surprises then, when DXI-Sin qualified on pole, but only just by one hundredth of a second from Lucas Racing who would start along side them. GX160Parts.com qualified in an impressive third place, with Sterlingsafetywear (aka Baron Racing) making up the second row.
After a clean start, all the usual culprits were scrambling about in an attempt to take control at the front and as the race settled down, it was DXI-Sin, closely followed by Sterlingsafetywear, who had pulled away from the pack led by AJB 1. With an hour and a half’s racing completed, the top six teams were all still on the same lap, as the first of the three mandatory fuel-stop windows approached and the leading duo were still only four seconds clear of Autotekk, who now led the train of AJB 1, GX160Parts.com, Lucas Racing and Team X.
With everyone refuelled and one third race distance completed, the lead pair had increased their advantage to about eighteen seconds, whilst SZR had slipped to 38th place due to axle problems along with Staffs Bulls who were also having a torrid day. Leading pro-class runner was still GX160Parts.com, who were lying in an excellent 5th place overall and DXI-Wild were clubman class leaders in 11th place.
DXI-Sin now started to pull away on their own and were now 30 seconds clear of Autotekk who had somehow managed to leapfrog Sterlingsafetywear, Lucas Racing were in 4th place very closely followed by AJB 1, Team X and Team I.T.(Alpha Racing in disguise). Team X drivers were obviously under instructions to finish safely and collect whatever points fell their way, as they only needed a reasonable finish today as points leaders, to either clinch the Championship at this round, or certainly make the job simple at the final round in four weeks time.
With half race distance now behind them, DXI-Sin were over 30 seconds clear of Autotekk, who were in turn now 14 seconds clear of Sterlingsafetywear in 3rd place. Teamtec now led the pro-class from GX160Parts.com, AJB 2, and RGM Racing, whilst SD Racing and DXI-Wild battled it out for the clubman honours.
With 2 hours remaining, 1st and 2nd place looked set barring mechanical failure, however all the other super-pro teams were all still on the same lap and the last podium place was definitely up for grabs. AJB 1, Lucas Racing, Team X and Sterlingsafetywear, all managed to take turns for the 3rd place spot, knowing that the few extra points would likely prove invaluable in the Championship race.
Finally it was AJB 1 who claimed the 3rd place victory, leaving DXI-Sin to take the overall win and Autotekk cruised home in a comfortable runner up spot. AJB 2 just stole the pro-class honours from Teamtec and unsurprisingly, DXI-Wild claimed the clubman class victory to conclude an excellent days racing.
Although there were very few incidents and the driving standards had been particularly high, many drivers were physically struggling by the end of the race, as Thruxton’s 1100 metre track provides very little rest bite over a six-hour race. However the penultimate round of the Championship had proved a resounding success, at this most excellent venue and the final round now moves on to Sandown Park in 4 weeks time, where Team X will see if they are able to claim victory in this most coveted of endurance Championships and become the first team to ever hold this title for a second time.
