RAFMSA Karting Championship
Round 4 - Crail - July 2006
The RAFMSA met at Crail, on the east cost of Scotland, in July for the fourth round of the PAX Insurance assisted RAFMSA Championship 2006. Competitors had travelled from as far afield as London, Oxfordshire and Northern Ireland.
Having had a successful meeting at this circuit last year, the drivers were warmly welcomed back by members of the East of Scotland Kart Club. There have been several improvements to the circuit since the RAFMSA last visited - a new café, enhanced starting grid and upgraded circuit. There are many more improvements planned for the circuit, which will be carried out by the committee members and several willing volunteers.
The Saturday testing saw some fantastic weather. The RAFMSA drivers put in some good times from the start. As the testing drew to a close, it was back to the pits to reflect before the 4-hour endurance race. The Bananaclips (Dean Marratty, Chris Hughes and Nez Ross) took first place in the endurance race, with DCAE Cosford, who ran two karts, coming second and third.
The good weather continued on Sunday. Marcus Ramsden won the first heat, having led throughout. Dean Maratty and Luke Bourne battled it out for second place - Maratty just finishing ahead of Bourne.
Heat two saw Nez Ross on pole. He held his lead until his rear tyre punctured on the back straight, ending his race. This gave Dean Maratty the chance to take the lead and finish ahead of Ramsden with ex-serviceman Hamish Clark crossing the line in third place.
The third heat was the most eventful of the day. Leigh Ward’s half spin collected Kev Meynell and Dean Maratty and split the pack. Ramsden and Clark took the advantage, finsihing first and second respectively. Dave Young finished a good third.
In the final, Marcus Ramsden and local boy, Hamish Clark were on the front of the grid. Ramsden took the upper hand and raced away for an excellent win. Clark held out in second place for most of the race – however made one mistake, which was all that Marratty needed to overtake him and finish second.
The drive of the day went to Hamish Clark. The seasoned veteran proved that track knowledge and experience means everything.
