The 2005
Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 9 - 16th October 2005 - Sandown Park
A full grid of 40 teams, lined up to start the final round of the championship with everything still to play for. The super-pro teams of So-Co, Lucas Racing and DXI-Sin were joined by pro-class front-runners, Focus, to make up the first two rows of the grid.
Pole sitters So-Co took up the lead from DXI-Sin, Focus, Lucas and Baron, whilst championship contenders Autotekk were back in 8th place. As the race settled down So-Co started to pull out a lead from the ensuing pack and within half an hour of the start they were 10 seconds clear of DXI-Sin.
As the one-hour mark approached, the super-pro teams had been infiltrated by a number of pro-class teams, putting in outstanding performances, namely Focus, Team Velocity and TeamTec who were circulating in 3rd, 5th and 8th places respectfully.
With the first fuel stop window concluded, So-Co now led DXI-Sin by a lap with Baron moving up into 3rd place just in front of Focus. Champions elect, Lucas were circulating in 6th place, safe in the knowledge that their nearest rivals Autotekk, were having a torrid day back in 15th place. To make matters worse their potential 2nd place in the championship, was now coming under threat from DXI-Sin who were right up the front of the leader board.
Teamworx and Westco were leading the clubman brigade in 12th and 14th places overall, whilst Spin Doctors and Pulse TGSR had incurred major problems which had effectively put them out of contention.
As the half way mark approached, So-Co had maintained their 1 lap lead with Baron moving up into 2nd place just in front of DXI-Sin. Focus were still 4th followed by Lucas, Misfits, Kartoon and Velocity, all of whom were still on the same lap. Team BAR, Teamworx and DBR Koene Kart were all having a good day just outside the top ten whilst So-Co then put in the fastest lap of the day with a 45.7 second lap.
With the second fuel stop completed, DXI-Sin and regained their 2nd place from Baron, whilst DBR had leap-frogged into 4th place with an unusual fuel strategy. Focus were now in 5th from Lucas with Westco and Misfits making it into the top ten.
In the pro-class Focus led, Misfits, TeamTec and Team BAR, whilst Westco led the clubman class from Teamworx and PDQ in a creditable12th place overall.
With and hour and a half to go, all the teams with the exception of DBR had completed the last of their fuel stops and So-Co were now a lap and a bit clear of DXI-Sin who were in turn the same distance clear of Baron in 3rd place. Champions elect, Lucas were having a quiet day in a satisfactory 6th place, whilst DXI-Sin were now looking good for 2nd place in the race and 2nd place in the championship, providing they maintained their position and Autotekk remained outside the top ten.
With half an hour to go, So-Co were now cruising, DXI-Sin were running in safe mode in 2nd, Baron were still 3rd, just in front of Lucas who would likely settle for 4th. Focus were in an excellent 5th and still leading the pro-class, just in front of a fast finishing DBR with Misfits in 7th, a late rush from Kartoon in 8th, and TeamTec and Team BAR making up the top ten.
As the chequered flag fell, So-Co took the win on the day from DXI-Sin and Baron, but Lucas Racing’s 4th place insured that the 2005 Championship title was theirs and DXI-Sin’s 2nd place stole the runners-up title from Autotekk.
After a closely contested championship, Lucas Racing vowed to return next season in an effort to be the first team ever to win the title twice, when The UK Pro-Kart Endurance Championship, visits eight different circuits in 2006.
