Lakeside Karting - Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 8 - 14th December 2003 - Lakeside Kart Circuit

Great turn out for the final round of the championship with 17 teams entered bearing in mind a maximum grid of 25 karts so plenty of close action anticipated. Added excitement of a Channel 4 film crew filming a racing rivals documentary. Tension was at fever pitch with just 3 points separating the top two overall, Teamtec & FAB Kartsport.

Twenty minutes qualifying saw Westco grab pole, their first of the year with Teamtec a tenth back. Very close in 3rd new team RM20 with a scorcher of a lap on their debut. FAB Kartsport 4th & the Biz team BBM rounding out the top 5. P-Sports headed the Clubman class with GT Motors 2nd & another new team Webbtech Racing in 3rd. Cooch failed to set a time due to a snapped chain in practice & J+G forced to start from the pitlane with some hasty last minute chassis repairs.

Rolling race start behind Santa’s new prokart! with Dave Bright for Westco immediately controlling the field. RM20 already pushing Teamtec for position. BBM we’re judged to have broken formation & we’re subsequently black-flagged rejoining dead last. FAB & Teamworks in the background on the chase.

Fifteen minutes in & Westco already lead by a comfortable margin. A real ding dong battle developing for 2nd between Teamtec & RM20 with many position changes. FAB 5 seconds back in 4th & a great effort by BBM sees them recover to 5th a further 11 seconds back. Joe Patterson for BDC on a great charge of his own leading Clubman & 6th overall from 13th on the grid. Dale for Teamworks 7th keeping Joe honest in another battle for position. P-Sports a lap back 2nd in Clubman & gap of 4 seconds to NF in 3rd.

Thirty-minute mark & Westco still lead with the gap now at 23 seconds. RM20 now ahead of Teamtec but nothing to choose between them. FAB unable to do much about this pair 11 seconds back in 4th & BBM slowly closing the gap to them just 5 seconds adrift in 5th. Right on BBM’s bumper now & working together to close the gap after their early problems, a nose to tail Cooch & J+G leapfrog the BDC/Teamworks battle but we did have a 4 way scrap for a number of laps. Superb close racing by all drivers concerned. BDC still lead Clubman by a lap with NF having caught P-Sports in a scrap grab 2nd in class.

At the one hour mark Westco make their first of two compulsary stops rejoining 6th. Teamtec are promoted to the lead with RM20 unfortunately experiencing fuel problems & dropping right down the order. The second Biz team, BBM we’re therefore promoted to 2nd but a lap down. Cooch still right on their tail in 3rd. FAB therefore lose 2 places now 5 seconds back in 4th & J+G 5 seconds back in 5th. BDC still head Clubman with NF clear in 2nd as P-Sports are forced to stop with a sheared wheel bolt. New team Webbtech a lap back & now running 3rd in class.

Half distance & Westco are back in the lead with Teamtec 5 seconds behind, 2nd. BBM still a lap adrift in 3rd with Cooch 8 seconds behind in 4th. Battle for 5th with nothing to choose between J+G and FAB. Big change in Clubman as both Webbtech & SR Racing leapfrog BDC & NF. Just 15 seconds separate the lead in class at this stage. BDC unfortunately forced into retirement now with NF now running 3rd in class.

Two hours gone & Westco re-establish their lap advantage from Teamtec. BBM now on the same lap 5 seconds behind in 3rd. Cooch just 11 seconds back in 4th with J+G a lap down in 5th. FAB’s challenge for the Championship comes to an end with brake problems dropping them down the order. Clubman battle really hotting up with NF on a real charge now up to 6th overall & 1st in class. Webbtech just 11 seconds down, 2nd & SR a lap down in 3rd.

And so to the last half hours racing in 2003. Westco continue to push now 2 laps to the good at the sharp end. Teamtec still 2nd but Cooch eager to upset things & really pushing now & past BBM just 7 seconds behind in 3rd. Lead Clubman team NF although 4 laps adrift are actually now 5th overall with Webbtech still 2nd & SR 3rd.

With 10 minutes to run we have our only red flag incident of the year as CDL2 suffer a big off resulting in immediate retirement & fortunately no serious injury to the driver. Race quickly re-started for the final push with Westco on their DBR Eglem securing a comfortable win. Just rewards for them after a long season’s toil & more than their fair share of problems. BBM jumped ahead of Teamtec to come in 2nd. Teamtec just 4.29 seconds behind & therefore 3rd & win the Championship in the process. Cooch come in underweight, a real shame after a fine showing leaving J+G 4th. A dream first owner/driver event for Webbtech Racing secures 5th overall & 1st in Clubman. Superb debut. NF Racing hold onto 2nd scoring enough points for the Clubman title with SR Racing just 6.34 seconds adrift in 3rd. David Bright with fastest race lap won a trackday in a race TVR Tuscan generously provided by CDL Racing.

A great first year for the Championship & the plan is for a 9 round series in 2004. Races will be the first Sunday of the month kicking off March 7th with sponsors to be confirmed. A very big thankyou to this years sponsors CDL Racing, 7Kart Components & kartinsurance.com.

Thanks for supporting the series this year, I hope you’ve enjoyed your racing as much as we have running the events & we look forward to seeing you again next year. Merry Christmas & wishing you a prosperous New Year. All the best, Simon & all the Lakeside team.
