Super 1 - MSA
Series
Round 2 - Clay Pigeon - 27/04/03
Formula A : Win for Catt but Litchfield maintains series lead.
Inclement weather and unpredictable action made for an enthralling weekend of karting at Clay Pigeon, Dorset, on Sunday as the Formula A class of the ELF-Hill House Hammond MSA Super One Championship resumed for its second outing of 2003. After the opening meeting of the year at Larkhall in Scotland it was Mark Litchfield (Marston Montgomery) and David Gregory (Sheffield) who headed to Clay Pigeon aiming to build on their early season points totals at the head of the standings. Come race day, however, and it was the experienced Gary Catt (Thruxton) who took the plaudits at the southern venue after some incredible drives to move much closer to championship leader Litchfield.
Throughout Sunday's heats and opening finals the weather remained dry and it was Catt who, starting a lowly 18th on the grid, clawed his way through the field to take a hard-earned victory in the first of the Formula A points scoring finals - James Sutton (Corringham) was second and reigning champion Mark Rochford (Wincanton) third. By the time of final two the heavens had opened and it was the in-form Catt who led the way until just after half distance when Duncan Tappy (West Ewell), who started mid-grid, snatched the lead. In a cruel twist of fate though the chain on Tappy's kart 'flipped' putting him out and so it was up to Catt and Mark Litchfield to battle for the win, the latter taking first position with three laps to go to secure his second finals win of the season.
Following his tremendous weekend Catt commented: "I'm really pleased with the way everything went and although I would have obviously preferred two wins I've taken away some healthy points which have lifted me quite a way in the standings. The racing was really good and I'm pleased with the outcome."
Championship leader Mark Litchfield said: "The meeting had its ups and downs and while the first race wasn't as I would have liked the second one turned out really well. The rain played to my advantage really and although Gary Catt took away a lot of points he was too far behind me to go into the lead of the championship. Overall I'm pretty happy with the way the weekend went." Click here for all Round 2 results.
JICA : Legris and Christodoulou share finals honours.
Formula JICA front-runner Jonathan Legris (Bournemouth) put in the drive of his life at Clay Pigeon on Sunday to win the second of the day's points scoring finals as the ELF-Hill House Hammond MSA Super One Championships resumed at the Dorset venue.
Having had dry weather throughout the heats and opening final of the day, rain began to fall prior to final two threatening to turn the race into something of a lottery. With all drivers starting on the same settings it always promised to be an intriguing final but nobody could have predicted the outcome as a hard-charging Legris scythed his way through the field from dead last on the grid to take a truly incredible and memorable win. After the opening meeting of the year at Larkhall in Scotland it was Jon Lancaster (Pudsey) and Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) who headed to Clay Pigeon aiming to build on their excellent early season performances, the latter successful in his quest after notching a race win in final one. Christodoulou also took second behind Legris in final two adding another impressive haul of points to his substantial championship total. Freddie Martin-Dye (Guildford), meanwhile, just got the better of Viktor Jensen (Esher) on the last corner to take third when Jensen ran wide after trying a brave passing move. Final two winner Legris was delighted with his performance, commenting: "I knew it would be tough starting from the back of the grid but I'm very happy with the way the second final went for me, it's a fantastic result. It's always great to win but to come through everyone else like that is extra special."
Riki Christodoulou was delighted with his second finals victory of the season, saying: "I'm very pleased with the result and it was always going to be a challenge in the races after having my practice times excluded for the kart being underweight. I was always confident that I'd go well in either the wet or dry and so to win one of the finals was great - it's more good points for the championship." Click here for all Round 2 results.
