April Meeting -
27th April 2003 - Matchams Kart Circuit
The morning started as a dry and overcast one for the happy band of members arriving for the opening round of the Championship. However, the weather was to remain dry, and the atmosphere and morale were positively sunny!
Some visitors from Crawley increased Matchams numbers. At first, they seemed to struggle a little with the way in which we operate, but soon settled down and hopefully enjoyed their day. We look forward to welcoming them back next month.
The Cadets were the first to race, with a great battle throughout the day between David Mack 26 from Poole and James Raven 17 from Portsmouth. Sadly, James retired from the first heat, as his clutch failed. But he then won the next two heats, meaning that he and David shared the front row for the final, with David on pole. Try as he might, James could not find a way around David, despite racing a postage stamp width away from his back bumper for most of the time. The frustration showed, as James thumped his steering wheel as he crossed the line behind David! James Thorpe 88 (Poole) followed the battle home in third place.
100 Clubman saw the biggest grid of the day, and plenty of action, with the pace being fast and furious, and plenty of blue flags as the novices found their feet! Local Bournemouth driver Clive Jackson 99 won all three heats, but behind him there was a right royal battle between Rob White 4 (Tuckton), Stewart Morris 17 (Southampton) and Darren Civil 26 (Waterlooville). Verwood driver Mike Reynolds 64 was there or there abouts as well during the heats, despite having to start two karts on the dummy grid each time, as his son Richard had a clutch on his TKM engine! The final was fast and hard fought, with Rob White 4 keeping Clive Jackson 99 honest in the opening laps, until he span out after some contact with a hard-pushing Darren Civil 26. Clive then ran away and hid, sweeping past back markers as he went, leaving Darren to take the second place and Stewart Morris 17 to come home in third.
The Pro-Kart class saw some of the closest racing of the day. Normally all gentlemanly and polite when racing, the gloves were off this month! This led to a different heat winner each time, with Alderholt driver Christophe Mathers 7 winning the first, as his father Kevin 9 had to watch from the infield after retiring. He got his own back in the second heat though, scoring a second win for the Mathers family. Then, in the third heat, the power shifted to the Poole family of the Aldwells, as Chris 37 won this one, despite Kevin trying every trick in the book (and a couple that are not in there!) to pass him. The final was electric, Chris and Kevin again battling every inch of the track, allowing Chris' son Darren 1 to disappear into the sunset and win. However, Kevin finally found a way around the widest Pro-Kart in the West of Chris 37(or should that be 007 as I am sure that axle was getting wider on the straights!) A daring move down the short middle straight saw him take a well-deserved second position, with Chris on the third step of the podium.
The first win in the 125 Rotax class went to Daniel Alford 33 from Brighton. But then local driver Alex Green 2 (Wimborne) won the next two. He then went on to win an extremely fast final, despite the attentions of another local driver, and reigning Champion, James Pardon 1 from Sherbourne. He had to settle for second though, as Alex was on fine form and did not give James the slightest opportunity to pass him. Earlier heat winner, Daniel Alford 33, came home in third.
After all the serious racing, we then had a bit of fun organised by the new Clerk of the Course, Gary White. The drivers were split into three teams, then ran a relay race against the clock, with experienced drivers timed over three laps, and the novices over two, each driver taking to the track as the previous one finished. This proved a very popular race, and the result was extremely close, with just 14 seconds between the top two teams! Team A, led by Cadet driver James Raven 17 (Portsmouth) took the win, and the bag of King Size Mars Bars that were far more gratefully received than any of the trophies! This was the first meeting organised by the newly formed Matchams/drivers co-operative, and the feeling was that it was very successful. The whole day had a friendly and warm feeling to it. Even during the serious Championship races, drivers were helping one another, before going on to the track and racing their boots off! The relay race was well received and brought about some great team spirit. We hope to do something similar again next month. If you are interested in joining us, contact the Club Secretary, Chris Aldwell on 07952 192191 or chrisandmags@ntlworld.com or see our website at www.ringwoodraceway.com. We race on the last Sunday of each month, and look forward to seeing you.
