GX 160 pull start problem

Today I had a problem with TWO different pull starts on our prokarts; the plastic pawls that engage in the slots stuck out and wouldn't go back in. Closer examination appears to reveal the plate that holds the pawls in has become twisted/distorted - what's all that about please? Is there a mod to prevent this happening? Eventually managed to start the engines but the rope would not recoil. As mentioned in another thread, thankfully I have spare engines but I note the pawls on these were made of metal. My guess would be that the plastic pawls are earlier types and the metal later types?
As always any advice you can give is appreciated.
