wow, a blast from the past...

I helped build a BanVil (BSA Bantam frame/Villers 6e/8e/9e engines) road bike, with lightweight fiberglass petrol tank and alloy seat and hump, in 1967 that had padded flywheel, skimmed head, bored carb, ported crankcases and barrel, expansion box, close ratio gearbox (essential to keep it on the boil) and maxed out around 90mph.

Revs were not a restriction in those days, you just screwed its neck!

I would guess around 6000 revs per min were the norm...
