I take it you can't actually feel the machine finish if you run a finger nail over it? Rotating parts want to be as smooth as possible on the bearing surfaces (hence polish), it's your bore that needs that criss cross finish (honed) to retain the oil.

I presume you meant 15W40 rather than a range between 15 and 40W. For the UK, I'd take 5W30 as being medium weight, bearing in mind a certain builder sells 0W10 for use in his engines.

If you speak to the place that sold you the rods, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need.
