This sounds like fun but there may be limited opportunities to race in modified form.

In answer to the questions posed regarding the mods you are considering I'd comment as follows:

Q1. Do I need to fit a billet con rod? No. the standard rod is good for more than 6k
Q2 Do I need to fit the aluminium flywheel? No but lightening the existing steel flywheel in conjunction with adjusting the timing will produce equal if not better results
Q3 Debbaffled GX160 exhaust or race pipe? Definitely de baffle and open up the flanges. I have no experience of anything else
Q4 Do I have the head skimmed and if so by how much? Yes but no idea
Q5 Do I buy a skimmed head? Up to you
Q6 Do I fit a GX200 head gasket to the standard head? Yes. Without skimming this is an easy uplift in compression
Q7 Do I fit a 4 or 8 advance timing key? 8 but flywheels have shown to have massive variations in standard timing. You don't have to buy the key. Simply file down the standard one to get the desired magnet position at TDC
Q8 Do I fit lash caps on both inlet and exhaust? For 6k you will be fine with standard

A gx200 carb and cam will also pay dividends along with optimising the can timing.

Save for the enjoyment of having a play, however, I do have to question why. RPM are selling modified gx200 motors for just £300 plus VAT and these will be far quicker than any modified 160. The modified lads raced at PFI earlier this year and I was surprised that they were not that much quicker than the times previously achieved by SP 160s and were considerably slower than the extremes.

Regardless, enjoy your tinkering.

Graeme
