You need to ask yourself three questions:
How much longer you'll spend in bambino?
Are you going to race, if so MSA or ikr?
Does loosing money matter to you?
We were in a similar position moving from bambino to cadet. The Iame had been announced but no one knew whether people would switch quickly from comer to Iame, (the msa had anounced that comer would still be surported for something like two years)
We held back, brought a rally cheep unsealed comer engine to practice on and then got a new Iame engine the day they were released. Our friend, went comer thinking there would be a slow take-up and wanting to ensure he could find a good grid.
History says I made the right choice but there was no certainty at the time. I still have that Iame engine, it's worth at least what I paid for it and the decline of comer was far quicker than most believed would be the case. Our freind had one good season with the comer but the grids were falling away even towards the end of that year. Plus his £1k, good history engines are paperweights now, in fact last year I brought one off him for £150, so I could sell an old zip lightening rolling chassis as complete starter kart.
In short, there is no right answer but (to the best of my knowledge)the msa haven't selected the Iame as the next bambino engine but given the rise of Iame in other classes I wouldn't bet against it! Once they do, comer will likely hang on for a while but values will plummet.
If I was at the beginning of our bambino time, I'd hang on and go Iame, if that becomes the new msa engine. If I only had a year to go, I'd try and pick up a good comer but I'd be looking to pay as little as possible, as there will be plenty of people still trying to get top dollar, before any decision is finalised!
