Thought there might have been a grey area over barrel nuts ref MSA use. But we raced for about 4 years in MSA at 4 differnet circuits including PFI, sometimes with two karts and throughout used barrel nuts and not once were we pulled up over it in scrutineering!! But we never lost a wheel either because there wasn't two threads showing. There was alaways at least double the dia of thread in the barrel nut though.
Two threads showing in not a bad thing - we used it in microlight engineering and inspections.
I think if colin chapman saw more that two threads showing at Lotus - he's cut one thread off in the worship of weight saving!
