Is the wire definitely broken and not just cut off?

On the old loom with the 6.5mm push on connectors for the battery, there is only one earth wire that goes to the coil to earth it.

On the later looms with the eyelet terminals, there is an extra black lead that is used for the DD2 gear change solenoid and is used to 'kill' the coil during gear changes by earthing the coil.

This has a smaller eyelet on it and is usually taped off.

If you have the remains of an eyelet and wire on one of the nuts on the coil bobbins, then you definitely have an earth broken.

Sometimes this earth lead gets progressively shorter as new terminals are crimped on and it gets to the point where it's so short that it is under constant tension when attached to the coil bobbin.

You can extend the lead by using bullet male/female crimp connectors and a new 6mm eyelet.

If you make a couple of leads up then you have a spare for the next time it breaks.

The eyelets you usually get in the little packs are often made of copper and have a tendency to fracture frequently, it's better to try and get the plated steel ones if you can.

Making up an extension lead means it's quicker to disconnect when changing the engine too, as you just have to pull the bullet connector apart.

You've also relieved the tension of a shortened lead.

You can buy terminal kits with the crimp tool on Ebay quite cheaply and they're always handy for the panick moments when a wire comes off when you're in a rush.

Make sure you have a couple of earth straps on the coil bobbins too, one of which must be a Rotax one if you're racing in non IKR.
