Been a member of this site since 2000 and been involved with both sprint and enduro Prokarts throughout (plus Rotax and Cadet).

The point I make is more about education than anything else. I don't think you need to be a Clerk to know that the role isn't straightforward. Over the years I have had our in stitches when asked to explain my actions (and still got penalised), got so red in the face with frustration that I got put to the back of the grid and go completely white when they realised that their snap judgement on a black flag against my closest rival that day was completely incorrect.

I make a point in maintaining a good relationship with the officials and respect them for the role they play but the good ones do apply discretion and educate rather than application of the strict letter of the rule book. Granted, non-MSA requires the Clerks to be judge and jury which we totally accept and move on (little choice really) but isn't it better to be warned of the consequences of an action if repeated or occurs at National level than destroying people's opinion of the sport. Being too officious is, in my view, one of the many issues we face today.

The dsq for the wrong number size I mention above followed a warning the previous month. That message was well and truly received and I bet never repeated. I also regularly overheard the scrutineer advising on what needs to be altered/added if drivers were to race MSA (chain guards for example).

The wider problem is one of a change in society. The football mentality I have referred to in the past where the system is against then. No respect for position of authority etc where arguing and abusing the referee is the accepted norm. In a different sport when I competed at National level you dare question the officials' decision and you'd be sent home on the spot. But then again one of your biggest fears was getting dragged home by the local policeman (after receiving the proverbial clip) and know you were in for worse when you got home as it didn't matter what you'd been up to your parents would take their side and knock ten shades of the proverbial out of you.

In summary, there has to be a time to educate and inform and another to apply the letter of the rule book (oh and bring back corporal and capital punishment!!!)
