Practice will improve his driving more than discussion. I would also video him and, when he says 'Dad, that boy beat me; he must have a quicker kart than me...' show him the video of where he lost out.

I don't mean, just tell him what YOU think; I mean, look through the videos and watch at what point he lost out to the kart in front. If he sees that he is entering a corner 5 foot behind a quicker driver and he starts to exit 20 feet behind the other driver, then you should be able to find the differences in their driving: he then has to work copying the other guy.

Generally (but NOT universally), slow-in-quick-out' works best when you have plenty of power, Your Bambino does not and thus it can't 'drive' its way out of the corner. Often (but not always) the best way with a lower powered kart is to try to maintain as much speed as possible THROUGH the corner, not just at exit! As a broad (but not universal) rule, I'd suggest, quickish-in, quickish-through-and quickish-out!

Still, from the videos, you'll be able to see if my view (low power equals: smooth-almost-even-speed-cornering) or your view (slow-in-quick-out) or his view 'quick-in', 'scrabble-about' then 'slow-out'; works best. The videos will educate you both.

It also does a great job of showing how the 'line' of the 'quick boys' differ from his line. Usually, the first thing you notice is that the quick boys use ALL the track. I'd argue, you paid to hire the whole track..... not just the middle bit..... so use it!

It should also show you where he is losing out under-braking. Stand alongside the best braking part of the track and video your lad and the quick lads. You'll be able to see (and point out) where your lad is being beaten on the brakes! Don't just SAY, 'you are braking too early', show him on the videos how other brake MUCH later and he'll be able to work it out for himself if he is ever going to be quick!!
