You're lucky not to have damaged the ignition switch as it's designed to carry only a low current for the coil.

Perhaps you had one thick and one thin wire on each switch.

The thicker high current leads must go to the starter button.

I believe the coil has a diode protection in case you connect the battery in reverse and the starter motor can run in either direction, it just won't throw the bendix out to turn the engine over.
