If you had a hole in the pipe it would lose a lot of fluid and give you no brakes at all,
It`s the master cylinder seals not maintaining a seal down the bore, you can probably replicate the problem by gently pressing the pedal, it might go all the way down but if you press it sharply it will give you pressure.
Either replace the seals yourself or send off to R3/kelgate to do the job, remember to use dot-5 silicone fluid.
