Remember, a new axle is MUCH more expensive (and time-consuming to replace) than a new sprocket and/or carrier thus you'd be daft to go for the expensive item first before you have eliminated the others.

Secondly, the rotation of the wheel need have NO effect on the chain tension. If a wheel was bent, the chain could still revolve PERFECTLY but you'd still see a 'wobble in the wheel'.

Trust me: that old method should narrow down the fault to a single faulty item. I can't guarantee that but it will in the majority of cases! What have you got to lose by trying it?
