I'm fed up with the attitude that says taht 'our' form of karting is 'real' and anyone else's is 'not real'.

I'm equally fed up with the attitude that says that karting is only real if it relates to a particular noise, smell or ride that modern developments have made irrelevant.

It's no use telling me that 'old' karting, burning out 3 engines in a weekend to go slower around a track (look at the lap times), to have the same number of incidents with worse outcomes and spend more money (by the time I had paid for rebuilds) was somehow 'better'.

As for driving a DD engine, I doubt that most people can tell the difference between an aircooled F. Blue (DD, ex Formula A engine) and a current Lynx in performance....except I don't have to spend so much time being dragged down the track by a 'missed' re-board. ( And I don't miss the danger of accidents like the one that broke a driver's leg when his foot got trapped diring a re-board).

All karting is karting, whether it is competing at BP in a grid of 30 for an Ironman (possibly the only series that gets two full grids, 60+ drivers regularly) or competing for a national title.

We also have to consider what has happened to engine power. Many A&D karts have a similar output and performance to karts back in 'the heyday'. There's mention of 250cc gearbox karts with '70 bhp'. Elsewhere in this thread itpro mentions current 250's with 200 bhp.

Look back to 'the big grids' and you find that many of the engines were only 2/3rds or less than the power of today's engines, the same power that we are seeing in current A&D's. Some sites have karts with deliberately poor handling, just to keep the speeds down to what the majority of customers can handle safely. There was a reason that Novices, often up to 10 in a grid, were at the back. Yes, they got lapped frequently but they weren't going any faster than many A&D drivers.

Now getting more than 2 or 3 novices in a grid is a success.

Motorhomes etc. I have a motorhome because my wife wants to share my life and sport. She doesn't like standing in the cold all day and while I may find the wet 'fun', she finds it miserable. So I have a motorhome. I still have a tent for the kart and it is opensided, but I understand why others have walls and doors. Unfortunately it looks 'unfriendly', people mistake a desire for comfort for a desire for privacy. Maybe we need signs saying 'Please come in' or 'Visitors welcome'.

I don't think the MSA is useless, or if it is, it is our own fault. The MSA is advised by the committees and unsurprisingly these committees are filled with people who have their own agenda. But equally these committees have a problem finding replacements, so sitting tenants find themselves unopposed when they put themselves up for re-election. Why aren't the application books full (This year places are available on the Kart Committee and the Kart Technical committee), then the MSA could publish the newcomers to the lists rather than having to accept that some people have held a position for years.

Lastly, there's so much backbiting and politics. For example, the NKRA runs a regional championship for a 9 different classes as well as a 'Grande Finale' Day where the best of the regions could come toegther to find a 'national championship.

Recently a number of independent regional class championships have arisen. Some of them want to link up with similar series in other regions and also have a 'national day' but find the costs for their standalone national day impossible. Yet although the NKRA has offered, none of these series want to co-operate (even though some of them use the NKRA system of scoring, and championship rules that could have been taken from the NKRA website.

No-one in the NKRA takes any money from the Championship, despite allegations to the contrary by some disgruntled people, a claim echoed by some of these local series.

As a result, regional championships which benefit clubman drivers and clubs are increasingly being fragmented. Now what seems to be necessary is some co-operation between the various regions (and perhaps increasing the number of regions from the NKRA 3 (Scotland, North, South) but that means drivers signing up in numbers enough to support , say a south west and south east region, a central region a northern region and a scottish region.

But until people are actually prepared to co-operate (and I know some of the personalities involved are prickly) karting isn't going to become more inclusive, and the clubs and tracks aren't going to see any advantage in encouraging A&D customers become Owner Drivers and Owner Drivers who regard themselves as the only form of 'real karting' aren't going to address the issues of 'not real karters' joining their numbers.

Yes, I even race indoors as well and not just on my birthday

Rant over!
