A twin GX160 may be the way to go. If he's worried about the power (which is not huge) then you can simply start only one of the motors. Once he's happy: start both. When you are driving it, you can use both motors from the start.

However, even if he found TKM too powerful to start with, he'll get used to it in 5 minutes and he won't want to go back to 4 stroke karts.

To give you an idea, the GX160 produces about 5.5bhp, two thus produce 11bhp. The TKM is about 16bhp, the Blue will give around 20ish and the Rotax (or similar) will deliver late 20s. The Biland produces in the 30s, the Aixro gives 50 plus, 125 gearbox is 50bhp but with the huge power advantage of gears. The big beasts (almost mythical now) are the mighty twin cylinder 250 coming in at 100 bhp or so.

As you can see, 16bhp is actually quite low. My lad learned (at the age of 6) on an Arrows motor producing mid 20s. They don't take long to get used to power! One reaction always happens: no matter how quick the motor..... after a couple of hours, the driver will 'just want 1/5/50 bhp more'! That's racing!

Assure him, no matter how fast the motor, the kart only goes as fast as he 'requests' from the throttle pedal.

We have all 'skipped' Cadet Class in this discussion as you wouldn't be able to use it as well but it's an excellent place for your 11 year old to start. It's his size, weight and scale.

However, the first thing to do is to go and watch some races: you'll see some options.
