You could end up damaging the disc carrier or caliper. Try to make sure the axle is as clean as you can get it, and I normally make sure I have a decent coat of GT85 or WD40 on it too. I tap a blunt old flat blade screwdriver into the "notch" that the disc carrier bolt pinches up to open up the carrier disc hole a little. That way I can normally slide the axle out with gentle or even no hammering at all.
