I have been involved in karting for over 20 years and read the posts on this site on a daily basis, however I have not been motivated to post myself until now.
My son Graham has raced in all but one of the LGM X30 Seniors this season and found the class to be fun, competitive, entertaining, friendly, safe and close all season.
This weekend at Kimbolton saw the biggest grids so far and had the potential to be an great advert for the class.
Graham was at the back of the grid for the first two heats and made up 10 places in both as the blatant loading at the first corner was causing carnage, We knew it was going to happen in the last heat and we were not disappointed. Graham was on P4 and in the first corner ended up with another kart on top of him, his rear bumper hanging off and a mechanical flag..
Graham waited in parc Ferme for the race end and remonstrated with the whole grid, before speaking with the Clerk of the Course to ask if anything was going to be done about the driving standards. I politely approached the Clerk myself and spoke with him about what I felt was a major safety issue. He said he would investigate.. The driver who ended up on top of us was probably not at fault but was called in later on.
Apart from this the only driver in Senior X30 who was called into the Stewards office was Graham who sped into the pits after heat 3 due to his “red mist” anger at the driving standards.
Whilst we were in the office Graham spoke about the driving standards and suggested that the best way to resolve this was to speak with the grid before the final and tell them that if the same happened the race would be red flagged and moved to the end of the meeting if there was time. The Deputy Clark was very understanding and thought it was a good suggestion, but this was outside of his control.
Loading has always happened at Kimbolton due to the nature of the first corner. And at the drivers briefing the Clerk spoke very eloquently about this issue. In my view this should have been supported by the officials paying particular attention to the first corner identifying and punishing the drivers who do not heed the advice. The proposed front bumper will be an expensive alternative to having good meeting management.
I am not suggesting that Graham is a driving angel as he has spent a fair amount of time in the Stewards office over the years, but we spend a lot of our hard –earned money to enjoy our weekends racing and I for one, expect better from both Senior drivers and the people who are charged with making it fair and safe.
