The proper Alfano sensor has a parallel thread so will keep going until the hex head (or the little circlip that is sometimes fitted) touches. I use a light coating of low strength thread sealant for this type.

The one you have removed is most likely the aftermaket Alfano one made by Carp Crazy (or a similar name) and has a tapered thread, and from my experience gives the wrong temperature reading anyway.

Chuck the Carp Crazy one in the bin and fit your R R sensor with a light coating of low strength thread sealant - wind it down until it the Hex head touches the head cover. Just nip it up.
