"Now, rules aside, do we really want to be driving on kerbs in karts?"

I think it depends on why the kerb is there.

I cannot think of any reason why one should accept deliberate driving on a kerb, that it the intent to approach the kerb and drive on it, if the kerb is outside the intended limits of the track as indicated by the white lines.

However, I can see that if the kerb is there as a supplemental indicator that one has exceeded the track limits because the white line is obscured, then one has to accept accidental driving on that kerb. Essentially the white line should be 'on the kerb' but is inside the kerb for safety reasons.

Kerbs which are really 'hard verge' because holes were dug in grass should have hard verge status: the same as grass at the edge of an unkerbed track.

There are two other roles for kerbs. One is to assist the kart to stay within the track boundary and the other is to provide an incentive not to drive over that piece of ground. Neither need to be driven on.

I can see that some kerbs will be combinations. So a 'keep in the track' kerb may also have a ridged vibration surface to provide extra warning.

I can see that some kerbs will be of the wrong type, for safety reasons. So one might not have a 'keep in the track' kerb at the entrance to a chicane for example because the resultant throw in the air effect could be dangerous, but instead a 'hard verge with slow down surface'. This might encourage drivers to take the hard verge instead of stay within the track, but again is there any reason for this to have "deliberate drive" status.

The only reason I can see for deliberate drive over status is simply one of justice. We know that the observers on site will not catch all the offenders all of the time and therefore it is only those who stand out who are likely to be caught, drivers who are isolated either because they are at the front of a pack or drivers who are in the gap.

Do we think the zero-tolerance effect is more important than the absolute justice effect? After all, we all suspect that most of the offences, even contact, occur because of the example from other people getting away with it.

Or is it simply an admission that there are so many offences that it isn't worth addressing any of them?
