Heres my 2 pence worth, we have been cadet karting with my lad for over 2 years, so at the tender age of 8-1/4 I put him in for his ARKS test, as I thought he was ready for it, like everyone says I got him watching the DVD and he almost knew the words backwards, and we spent weeks learning the flags, I would then ask him at a random time of the day what certain flags were, got them all correct.....what more could be done!

Then comes the written test on the actual day of the ARKS test, the test is multiple-choice, and it has about 5 possible answers, as an adult this is easy, for an 8 year old who struggles with comprehension in his home-work, this does catch them out, and he did get a flag wrong....gulp!..... upon being asked the answer verbally by the examiner he got it correct straight away, all I can say is thank god the examiner was human and actually had some compassion and understanding, personally I thought he was going to fail him, as I could hear what was going on........so the lesson learned is make up some multiple-choice answers for your lad and get him used to that style of answering, also tell your lad to take as long as he likes and double check his answers as my lad was also not checking his answers and dare I say rushing it.......admittedly I was livid with him, and told him he had better drive flawless in his driving exam.

Then during the driving test every possible cretin was on the track, one lad was spinning and getting back on the track and driving the wrong way around!.......I just couldnt believe what I was seeing........but to my lads credit he drove around all the problems nice and safe and just got his head down and showed maturity and safe driving practice while setting the required lap time.

in the end he passed and we did our first MSA event a few weeks ago, I hope thats of help to you.
