Hi Knighty

I understand you but, really, 95% of our sharp responses are actually just banter. Think of this place as a pub full of noisy but fairly happy idiots and you'll have the right view.

The concept of 'Magnesium' rims is an odd one. Yes, many people will tell you that they 'manage heat' differently than Alloy Rims.....

However, if you ask those who think so what they actually DO, a quarter will say each of the following:

* They heat up faster
* They heat up SLOWER
* They dissipate heat faster
* They dissipate heat SLOWER

Why do they say this? Because there is little or no evidence as to which it is and, actually, there is little evidence about WHICH you need..... and that makes people GUESS!

Yes..... Mag Rims DO perform differently from alloy wheels...... but that may WELL be because they are constructed completely differently and could well be stiffer/softer than alloys. Again.... which one you want depends COMPLETELY on what you already have. If your rims are TOO stiff (...and how would you KNOW?) then you'd need a more flexible rim.... BUT, if they are too flexible (and.... how would you KNOW THAT, either?) then you'd need a stiffer rim.

I created a saying years ago which I still think is pretty accurate: 80% of EVERYTHING said in karting is utter B*LLSH*T: the skill is discovering WHICH 20% is right! I wish I KNEW which 20% it is but, after 50+ years, I am still pretty well in the dark, too! Don't trust me, either: I am no more an expert on this stuff than anyone else!

My only advice would be:

1) Ask questions and listen to the answer

2) Then ask them EXACTLY how their 'theory' works. For example, if they say Mags heat up more slowly..... check the physics of this (via 'Wiki for example) remembering that the rim thickness difference is SUBSTANTIAL, anyway.

3) Ask someone else as well..... you will rarely get the same answer TWICE. If you DO get the same answer repeatedly AND it makes logical sense when compared to physics AND they have damned good evidence..... then the answer may WELL be correct...... or they could ALL be deluded!

4) Politely ask them their reason and EVIDENCE for whatever they are claiming and you'll will (should) be shocked at the sort of evidence people give..... I wouldn't convict Abu Hamsa!

Good luck..... and welcome to the confusing world of karting..... Just remember, if it wasn't confusing, then you'd never beat ANYONE who's been in it longer than you as they'd know MUCH more than you..... that AIN'T what happens!

Please don't take any of this as a criticism of youself: I am just trying to help, I am NOT having a go at you!

Ian
