What do you expect to do?

As with any engine, the life of the engine is inversely proportional to how closely you push it to the edge. So you can probably run for a lot more than 10 hours at 12000 rpm, but a lot less is you are pushing to 16000 / 16500 rpm every lap.

So if you subject the engine to extreme race conditions, then it is wise to look at the engine to prevent incidents, like losing a little end circlip. Anything over 17000 needs looking at. (It depends whether you have the old powerbox or the new digital ignition as to whether you can get there).

Ron Shone (the Blue importer) takes the head and barrel off after every weekend, just to check that there is no damage, while other people have left the engine for over a thousand laps (1000 km), I think the record is 1300 laps, with no inspection at all. The engine was down on pace at that point.

For a racing engine, the normal maintenance schedule seems to be little end after 500 km, big end after 2000 km, convert that to laps and times according to your track.

Don't run the engine hot, 60-65 is race temperature, anything over 70 needs hand choking.
(calibrate your temp gauge: I found one that worked 'fine' but it read 70 when cold in the pits and went to 140 on the track, but at least I had checked it in hot water first)

Don't run the engine too lean, if the plug and piston are dry when you come in, then you are too lean (don't take the head off, use a torch).

If it's wet, then take the carb and reed block off and plug out, fill the engine with mixed fuel through the plug and pump it through the engine (but not the exhaust) to get the crud out, it's astonishing how much road grit there is in there. Then wash out the noise box before using it again.

Clean the noisebox and fuel filters every meeting, clean out the petrol tank if you find lots of crud in your filters.

Clean the bendix regularly and oil (but not chain lube, clean and grease the clutch bearing regularly, particularly if you have a lot of spin outs/ engine stops on the track and can hear the clutch spinning in the silence.

Otherwise the engine is almost maintenance free!
