The Storm can be a bit finicky to set up, but once sorted is a very good chassis. With any set up adjustments, firstly make sure that the chassis is straight and not bent / twisted. Seat in the right place, weight 60 / 40 rear to front distribution.

Use the genuine Zip rims for both dry and wet and use a standard or soft rear axle, 980mm length, short rear hubs.


At the rear, in the dry, set the hubs out touching the circlips.
At the front, start with 15mm spacers (total) on each stub. Front wheels parallel in the dry, standard 'top hats' in the tops of the stub axle yokes. Mid ride heights front and rear.

Whilst the tracking discs are okay for setting up the front tracking, if you are in this for the long haul or want to experiment with front setups, a set of lasers is a good investment (2nd hand if you can get them !) as they are far quicker to use than the discs, especially if you are moving from a dry to wet setting or vice versa.

The steering column (and seat position) is slightly offset away from the side of the engine (to help even out the weight distribution) and so the track rods are going to be slightly unequal in overall length - don't rely on using the same number of 'turns' on each rod to give you the same deflection (inwards or outwards) of the front wheels.

In the wet, raise the front ride height, set the front wheels toed out 2-4 degrees and use the camber/castor 'pills' (or top hats) to give you maximum positive camber (wheels leaning outwards) and maximum castor (stubs leaning backwards). Set the front hubs out as far as possible using spacers - again use the genuine Zip wet rims if you can. Bring the rear hubs in by 5mm from the circlips. Again, the lasers help to set the front up equal on both sides.

The different holes on the steering column allow for minor adjustment in sensitivity of the steering - the rearmost holes give a more responsive feel to steering input, due to the fact that the fixing point moves through a larger radius than the front holes for the same degree of movement of the steering wheel. The middle hole is the 'standard' setting.

The fixing points on the stubs allow relative adjustment of the Ackermann setting - simplisticly speaking, the outer hole gives less than the inner, again due to the length of the arc that the fixing point moves through from a given range of movement of the steering wheel. The outer fixing point seems to be the 'standard' setting.

Tyre pressures - start at 24psi all round in the dry, 30psi in the wet. If the track is damp with no standing water, use well worn wets/inters at 18psi.

Hope that this helps - i have given a bit more info than you asked for. It took us a while to get to this point. Once you are happy with the baseline setup, make adjustments to suit -but only change 1 setting at a time and check progress with the stopwatch. Good luck !!!!
