You need to record the Max and Min revs everytime your lad goes out. As he makes progress with his driving and corner exits you will see higher revs achieved and then you know it's time to drop a tooth.

Then in time he will achieve the same max revs with that sprocket and naturally he will be going faster.

I used to tell my lad the max revs were our department and the min revs were his. ie we would gear him to get the most from the Max rpm he was pulling but the Min rpm reflected how quick he was taking the slowest corner on the track. Recording every session allows you to monitor progress.

It also helps you when conditions change. eg if you suddenly lose 200rpm has the wind picked up and you need to add a tooth to compensate for the wind.

Re pressures you start higher than normal when less experienced as he's not driving hard enough to get the right heat. As he improves you want to be dropping pressures so that they don't overheat and go off after a few laps.

For fastest lap times you want to be running as low and loose as possible but obviously within the commfort and limits of your driver.
