It is a vicious spiral.

On the one hand accidents will always occur, on the other hand there are those who will rely on the fact that the safety features allow them to take greater risks than might be acceptable without them.

But some of the blame is due to poor interpretation of advice, especially by young drivers or over eager parents.

So when the Overtaking Advice on this forum suggests, perfectly reasonably,
"So, don't forget….look into the gap, choose a point on the kerb to focus on and aim for it, look for it and leave the other driver to worry about avoiding you"
this can or will be translated as
"imagine a gap exists, punch yourself in there and if there's contact and you stay on the track and the other driver doesn't, that's an overtake"

If the parent then suggests that getting out of the clerk's office unpunished is more important than establishing what happened, then we have a recipe for first corner mayhem. And far too often drivers who should be role models are guilty of the surreptitious tap (There's a video of a now-F1 driver who drives through the pack because inexplicably those in front of him suddenly go wide just as he catches up with them at a corner, sometimes two or three at a time. Once may be accident, twice coincidence but 16 times in one race?)

An S1 driver told me that 'at his level of driving, one should be able to cope with the contact'.

Sometimes the use / abuse of the judicial system means that officials are unable to make a judgement call because it would have to stand up to a barrister's interrogation.

In fact, one of the attractions of IKR racing put forward on this forum seems to be that there is no appeal from the organiser's decision and as a result people are more cautious about indulging in behaviour that will attract adverse attention and adverse opinion. It is certainly one of the problems for the MSA in generating rules that can be applied at club level enthusiastic driver as well as the international competition.

Much the same as, say, football, where there's a difference between Sunday league and the professional (and professional foulling) Premier league.
