For a novice it's a good idea to start off with the slicks at quite high pressure. We were advised to set them at 26psi when we started and this seemed to work for us. My son's quite a bit quicker than he was when we started a year ago but we still set them that high when it's a bit cold.

When you increase the pressure you're decreasing the contact patch on the tarmac. On the slicks, the smaller patch heats up quicker than if it were the full width of the tyre. For kids that are not yet up to full speed the extra heat is of more benefit than having the full width of the tyre on the track. As he gets faster, the performance during each run will drop off after a few laps and then you can think about dropping the pressure for the next run.

I'm not so sure about wets but if it's sliding about at 30 psi then I would guess they're either overheating in the middle or there simply isn't enough tread on the track. Reduce the pressure till they start working.
