Carbon in the head reduces the volume, increases the comprssion, improves performance.

However, if you are already at minimum head volume then carbon in the head makes you illegal.

Cooling fuel. It works in theory, though in practice you need to drop it to deep freeze temperatures to make that much difference to the engine. Pump fuel at -18C into the engine and you might see a difference. ( Dry ice is -78C and petrol freezes at around -150C I think)

Of course at that temperature your hands stick to the petrol tank and you can get freezer burn and you definitely don't want to leave the cap off when you drive out the pits. Additionally you run the risk of ice forming in the Carb which definitely inhibits performance.

Dry Ice in the airbox is illegal (the Blue book).

As other people have said, increasing your octane is only of value if you run near to predetonation. Some chemicals to raise octane also burn cooler (eg.Methanol) so you can run a setting that with pure petrol would overheat the engine so that might be a factor.

Having said that, one driver I know swears by it since he won a heat when he changed to Optimax. The optimism remains though he hasn't done it again.
