Paul,
You can race in the cadet class until the December following their 13th birthday. The only problem would be if your sons are tall and heavy - if too tall then they might have trouble fitting in a cadet and if too heavy then they would lose some pace but nothing to worry about in the early stages. The minimum weight for the kart and driver (including race gear and fuel) in cadets is 99kg. In a race you have to add lead to the kart to bring it up to this minimum but this does not apply to practice days.
If they can fit in a cadet then this is probably the best place to start learning but they will still be slower to start off than the more experienced drivers.
They all have to start somewhere and that is partly what practice days are for. The most important point is that your sons are not afraid to be on the track with the faster kids. I have seen new novices go out and quite frankly it looks as if they would go faster in a pedal kart and yes they do spin a lot. However, the more experienced drivers can soon spot these lads/lasses and should take care when coming up behind them. Mostly, by the end of the first day of practice they have gained pace.
Practice days are just that - for practice but despite all the reminders by CoCs and other officials they are treated as full blooded race days.
Stick with it - it is a great sport and hopefully your lads will love it. the big downside is that once they want to race you will need two sets of everything!
