It's a valid point you make regarding the volume of hair. I have a pretty normal hairstyle, and my helmet always feels looser after a haircut.
I don't think it was a big factor in Marco's accident though - you can see the strap was broken in some of the YouTube footage. If the impact was sufficient to break the strap, or wrench the strap from the anchor points, then the fit of the helmet isn't going to stop it coming off.
Racing is dangerous, and Marco, Colin and Vale were just unlucky.
