Bit of a simplistic view regarding Northern Ireland. That was against a backdrop of multiple sectarian murders day and daily. The army was brought in to protect the catholic population from what was seen as unionist violence. The republican elements took this as their opportunity to attack the British soldiers. Perhaps in some of these areas they would relish the chance to attack the army, but until other avenues are exhausted by the police, water cannons, baton rounds etc I would have to agree with Davyboy, you do not want curfews and military presence on the streets of London.
