Just my thoughts, may be wrong.

Two modern cars colliding at 50mph each will have been designed to deform and absorb the energy, transfering it from the point of impact around the safety cell, and prevent intrution of energy into the safety cell. Both cars will deform in a similar manner and although its micro seconds the car will slow in a more controlled manner. Drive into an immoveable object and you only have the deformation of one car taking all the energy from the crash.

So, in summary, haven't a clue ;@)
