My contract comes up for renewal next month but for the first time in about 10 years I am considering taking the highest value "free" phone to sell on ebay and keeping the Desire for another 18 months. It's the best phone I've had by far and I am not really seeing anything coming through of a similar size (I like the HD but just a little too big) that's worth the update. The Desire S (replacement to Desire) just has a slightly newer CPU and that's about it.
