hi Graham,
they should discuss things with Nick at Saxon, he's the expert.

Definitely tape up the lower openings!
As for 'what damage?' it needs checking over at the same time as fitting a new belt. A compression check would be first check and by comparing both cylinders/pressures you would see if you have a problem with bent valves.
