two stories of how craftsmen were valued in the 80's...

the boom of offshore had passed and everyone in our workmens club had either been offshore or been offered a job offshore...

I landed on a rig, as a contractor, and was told they no longer employed mech fitters! If they wanted one they phoned the beach and they flew one out!
Mech fitters are the blood coursing thro' the veins of engineering and yet they were not considered valuable enough to employ full time!

tale 2: I was in a new role offshore flying an ROV , keeping an eye on subsea work that constantly put the rig and its crew in jeopardy.
Our 3 man team landed on the rig, unpacked the containers, set up our equipment, test dived the ROV and videoed everything we did and saw underwater.
Our mobilisation from landing to first dive took 24hrs. We then sat waiting at the mercy of the drill floor... whatever they wanted they got... and that included our souls! A favourite phrase of the drill engineer was ' jump the ROV!'. This could be uttered during any down time of eating or sleeping and irrespective of the weather. If the drilling eng' wanted to see the subsea stack on screen we had to launch the ROV and provide the video feed to the drill floor.

The point I am making was that we were just another tool in box for the driller... jump the ROV! was how they perceived us and how little they valued us as craftsmen.
