If this asteroid were to hit America the dust ejected into the atmosphere would cause ice age like conditions all over the globe and leave our weather systems unrecognisable. We can't build our societies to cope with such extreme events, you can't build asteroid proof buildings in the way we build earthquake or hurricane proof ones! Nuclear power is very expensive to implement, certainly not cheap or easy, but it definitely reduces our use of fossil fuels and it doesn't need a fossil fuel backup like the current green alternatives.
