Theres nothing better than batter rails, a traveller and a chain boy to wind up the dozer and swing shovel drivers (having said that I did my turns in the swing shovels and dozers when I wasnt setting out). I did use a gps tracker system that was provided when I was doing some work for the Evironmental Agency (fields and river beds) but my favourite was doing mapping the road on that particular job, we had to do it at night so to do the levels we had to point a torch at the staff to see the marks with the engineers level lol, thats proper old school.
