'we one of the most over taxed countries in the world'
Where do you get that idea from?
At the end of the day, the same applies with taxation as anything else, you get what you pay for! You can't have it both ways.
In France University education is virtually free for the rif-raf. (The posh ones are expensive though).
But as a small self employed business I pay roughly 50% of my net profit in National Insurance social charges, before the rest is assessed for income tax. Furthermore the charges are so massive, it is impossibly expensive for a small business to employ anyone. Thus French small businesses cannot compete with other countries in Europe.
This is so that we can have reputedly one of the best health services (and most inefficient) in the world. All State employees retire on generous pensions at 60 or less. The army that does nothing but is twice the size of the UK and polititians earn on average 3 times their UK equivalents. No wonder France has a pensions gap and budget deficit that makes the UK problems look like lunch money.
From my side of the fence, the UK looks like the promised land.
