Historically education was funded out of general taxation even up to University level as education was seen as an investment in the country.

This was self financing as university students typically earned more and so paid more taxes. That's fair enough.

I don't recall the government ever saying to the public we have reduced general taxes becasue students are now paying towards their university degrees.

The new proposals mean students will start their working life with a debt to the government between £30-£50k. This is effectively an up front tax that has to paid back but with interest on top.

And because the graduate population has increased so significantly over the past 10 years many graduates will never earn really good salaries. But you can be sure the government has worked out that most will earn above the 21k threshold for them to have to pay this over a very long period of time.

So I don't blame the students for protesting and I hope they keep going. However I don't condone violence.

There is an important principal at stake here. If the government can target a section of the population to pay for something that is ultimately of value to the country and will bring in higher tax revenue, then what's to stop them targeting something that could be said not to be of value. eg providing costly health care to keep you alive in retirement.

For example how would you feel if the government said when you reach age 50 you have to pay £50k or £100k with interest to cover your health costs for the next 30 years! This being charged irrespective of the taxes you have already paid during your life time or the taxes you will yet pay up to your retirement.

The real issue that needs addressing is why are we one of the most over taxed countries in the world and yet government after government still wants to take more and borrow more on top.
