The argument that it is wrong for someone to receive huge coverage and adulation and earn £250,000 a week for playing football, while soldiers are killed and ignored, is valid. If this is wrong then it is a fault of society, not Wayne Rooney. “ He, like Mongo, is just a pawn in the game of life.”
'He should remember how insignificant he is in the great scheme of things?' Not in this society he shouldn't. Peoples significance is partly judged on their wealth and fame. If he said to his doctor he felt insignificant, he would probably be given antidepressants. Only in the philosophical sense of everything is insignificant could we class him as insignificant.
He plays a game where sportsmanship could get you sacked. Cheating is virtually mandatory. He is hero worshipped like a god and paid obscene amounts of money. He was poorly educated in a society that allows this. The idea that he should understand he should be anything other than what he already is, seems ridiculous.
If you reward people for how they behave then they will think it is right.
There is no divine, universal, or inbuilt right or wrong. Morals are formed on what a society says is right or wrong. This society at this moment, rewards, condones and excepts what Wayne Rooney does. And therefore it is right. If you think it should be wrong then campaign to change it. Convince fans that they shouldn't condone such a sport. Convince politicians that we shouldn't reward it in the way we do. If you can convince Rooney that it should be wrong you will have an excellent ally, but don't be surprised if he doesn’t see it your way. Remember, if you where in his shoes it is highly unlikely you would see it the same way.
