On the other hand, had this thread not been posted then when my wife pointed out to me this morning that a man had died karting at the weekend I would not have been able to give her the full picture and protect my sons right to race.

The issue of bad news spreading faster than good news is not unique to karting. On horse forums I've found deaths are reported before the ambulance seems to have left the scene. Human nature? Sign of the times? Perhaps it was always thus, just these days the ability to spread the word quickly is much greater.
