Before the wheelbase change there was too much weight on the front wheels, overloading the front tyres therefore causing understeer.

Lengthening the wheelbase by changing the suspension geometry has reduced the weight on the front as you suggest, therefore reducing the loading on the front tyres.

I don't fully understand the need to revert to the short wheelbase for Monaco. Normally they just change the steering rack but maybe the front geometry is now too extreme to enable this.
