As Ian said, probably a damaged screen ribbon or something like that. If its under warranty then it should be covered but if not then (depending on how handy/delicate/confident you are with a screw driver) its worth changing the ribbon yourself (or getting a small local pc shop to do it as you should only get charged for an hours labour max) as the ribbons are not expensive, below is an example but depends on what model you have.
