Ian... I'd hazzard a guess I was using thin clients even before you ! I deployed a large Citrix-based infrastructure as far back as 1996 when I worked in the US. I did a similar, though much larger international Citrix deployment around 2000. One of the biggest problems we experienced was the incompatibility of Windows [server] and Citrix Updates... I guess it was Microsoft's way of 'encouraging' people to go for Windows TS and RDP. Whatever, I reckon that the places I did this saved an absolute fortune on IT kit AND more importantly IT support.
In any event, my point is that local operating systems [Mac/Windows etc...] are much less of an issue when most of what you do is in a browser or via Apps. Thin clients demonstrated the concept some time ago - in fact dumb terminals did the same many decades ago - and its in a lightweight local OS that I see the future.
